Naira Velumyan, Licensed Paralegal

Naira Velumyan is the principal of VIA Legal and handles each client's file personally. Her practice is limited to one area: accident benefits claims for people injured in motor vehicle accidents in Ontario.

Credentials

  • Licensed Paralegal, Law Society of Ontario, licence P21370. Verify in the LSO directory
  • Registered Psychotherapist in Ontario
  • PhD in Psychology
  • First degree in law

From psychology to accident benefits

Naira's first degree was in law. She then completed a PhD in psychology and built a career as a psychotherapist, working with people recovering from trauma. That combination is unusual in this field, and it is the reason she focuses on car accident claims.

After a crash, the injuries that are hardest to prove are often the ones nobody can see: anxiety, sleep problems, fear of driving, low mood. Naira knows how these conditions are assessed and documented, and how they fit into an accident benefits claim under Ontario's Statutory Accident Benefits Schedule.

What she does for clients

  • Works out which insurer a client claims from and which benefits their policy includes, including the changes that took effect on July 1, 2026
  • Prepares and reviews applications and supporting forms, and tracks every deadline
  • Deals with the insurer on the client's behalf
  • Disputes denied or reduced benefits, including representation at the Licence Appeal Tribunal

A newcomer herself

Naira moved to Canada from Moscow and learned to work in English as a newcomer. Many of VIA Legal's clients are in the same position: recently arrived, unsure how Ontario insurance works, and more comfortable in their own language. VIA Legal serves clients in English, Russian, Ukrainian and Armenian.

Beyond the practice

Naira is a founding member of Immigrant Women in Business, a member of the Forbes Coaches Council, and the founder of the Academy of Social Competency, a training program in communication and confidence. She also gives free educational talks to community groups about what to do after a car accident.
